MIAMI -- A Haitian teen who had several surgeries to remove a 16-pound tumor-like growth from her face was back in a Miami operating room Thursday.
Marlie Casseus's mother, Maleine Antoine, said she is "happy, happy, happy" with the outcome of the latest surgery.
"Marlie is very happy too," Antoine said. "This morning, she asked me, 'Mom, (do I) have a nose,' and I said, 'Yes, you have a nose. You are beautiful too."
The huge tumor had kept Marlie from eating or breathing comfortably. It was successfully removed in January.
Thursday, surgeons at Holtz Children's Hospital began reconstructing her face by forming a nasal bridge and upper lip and correcting the extreme separation of her eyes.
Marlie will need at least two more surgeries. The care is being funded by the International Kids Fund.
