BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. -- A doctor who Broward Sheriff's Office detectives said was caught on surveillance video walking away with millions of dollars worth of beauty enhancement secrets and products has turned himself in.
Dr. Rodolfo A. Perez surrendered to authorities Friday with his attorney present. Authorities said Perez, 55, was identified from several Crime Stoppers tips after the video was shown on local TV.
According to the BSO, Perez conned his way into a beauty seminar at the Hilton Gardens Inn on Aug. 24 and stole a training manual, syringes and several bottles of phosphytidyl choline.
Detectives said Perez got into the locked conference room by telling a hotel employee that he had forgotten something inside, where a seminar on "Advanced Restylane, Advance Botox" for medical nurses and doctors was taking place.
Barbara Jones, who was conducting the seminar, told detectives that the manual contained beauty-enhancement secrets collected through years of research and that all the students at the seminar signed an agreement of confidentiality not to divulge the information for personal gain.
A similar incident occurred April 26 for the same seminar. Detectives said Perez told hotel employees he was a doctor from West Palm Beach who was interested in learning about the seminar, but used the opportunity to steal a copy of the manual.
Perez, who is a licensed doctor in the state of Florida, faces a third-degree felony charge of grand theft.
