MIAMI -- The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a report of a missing person from a Carnival cruise ship.
A Coast Guard spokesman said that officials from the cruise ship Imagination reported a 37-year-old Ohio woman missing Monday morning.
The 36-year-old woman was traveling aboard Imagination on a four-day cruise to Key West and Calica, Mexico. According to the Coast Guard, friends last saw the passenger Sunday at about 1:30 a.m., but did not report her missing until Monday, when the ship docked in Miami at about 9:30 a.m.
"They've just been announcing her name all day to come to the purser or whatever," said one Canadian passenger on the cruise. "I guess she never did."
Monday afternoon, Carnival released a statement saying: "She was reportedly last seen by a family member in the very early hours of Sunday, Sept. 10, several hours after the ship had sailed from the port of Calica, Mexico. All proper authorities have been notified and a full investigation is underway."
According to the International Council Of Cruise Lines, an industry lobbying group, a recent review of data gathered from 15 cruise lines showed that 24 people were reported missing from cruise ships from 2003 to 2005.
