Cross-Dresser, 2 Others Accused In Robbery

Men Arrested Following Credit Union Robbery

POSTED: Monday, September 18, 2006

Police said they have arrested three men suspected of robbing a credit union -- one who investigators said was dressed as a woman during the holdup.

Shortly before 11 a.m. Monday, the armed men walked into the Brightstar Credit Union, 4743 Hollywood Blvd., and held up the place, police said.

"All of a sudden, I could feel a gun to my back," customer Judy Cavalo said. "They tell me to open up the door and get in the vault. So I tried to open the door. I couldn't do it, then they opened it for me and I got in the vault and I sat down."

Cavalo said two of the men acted as lookouts while a third man collected money from the vault.

"They took the money and they just left," Cavalo said. "They didn't hurt anybody."

A Hollywood police officer responded to a silent alarm from the bank, and arrived at the back of the building and waited for a representative to come out and give the all clear. When no one came out of the bank, the officer walked toward the bank. At that point, a blue GMC Yukon, parked near the exit door of the bank, sped away.

The officer called in a report on the vehicle. She said that as she continued toward the bank, she came face to face with two robbery suspects, one of whom was dressed as a woman, while the other was wearing a mask and holding a bag containing cash. She ordered the suspects to stop, but both took off on foot.

One of the suspects was caught on Van Buren Street, about a block from the bank. The suspect who investigators said was dressed as a woman was arrested about eight blocks away, on Buchanan Street and 50th Avenue.

Meanwhile, officers pursued the Yukon west on Hollywood Boulevard until it collided with a beige Toyota Camry, driven by an elderly woman at the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Route 441. The Yukon jumped the curve and came to rest in the parking lot of a gas station.

Police said the suspect in the Yukon attempted to get away on foot but was caught.

A motorcycle police officer was injured while attempting to apprehend the driver, according to police.
