MIAMI -- A Haitian teenager whose face was dramatically disfigured by a 16-pound tumor made a public appearance Tuesday to show off the progress she has made.
Marlie Casseus has undergone three surgeries in the past year at Holtz Children's Hospital. Her next operation is scheduled for Oct. 5.
Although her lower lip hangs open, and she more corrections to her appearance will be made in future surgeries, Marlie has made tremendous progress.
Next week, doctors will reshape a titanium plate previously implanted in her jaw to help her close her mouth.
Marlie suffers from a rare genetic disease that causes bone to swell and be jelly-like. The growth had prevented Marlie from eating, breathing or speaking on her own.
Marlie's care is being funded by the International Kids Fund.
