Sabres Welcome Bruins To Buffalo

(Sports Network) - The Buffalo Sabres will try for another offensive explosion tonight when they welcome the Boston Bruins to HSBC Arena.

The Sabres lost the first two games of their three-game swing through California by an embarrassing 12-3 margin, but then took their offensive frustrations out on San Jose Saturday.

Paul Gaustad scored twice as Buffalo used a four-goal second period to down the San Jose Sharks, 7-1, at HP Pavilion.

Tim Connolly scored a short-handed goal and added an assist while Derek Roy also tallied a goal and a helper for the Sabres, who begin a quick two-game homestand tonight and are 8-5-0 this season as the host.

Ryan Miller had 21 saves in the victory while Toni Lydman and Brian Campbell had two assists apiece.

Meanwhile, Boston began a three-game road trip on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Toronto. Dennis Wideman picked a good time to extend his points streak to six games (2 goals, 4 assists), lighting the lamp in the second period for the eventual game winner.

Chuck Kobasew also scored for Boston, which snapped a two-game slide.

Alex Auld, making his first start since being acquired on Thursday from Phoenix, made 25 saves to earn the win. The Bruins went out and got Auld after starter Tim Thomas suffered a groin injury and Manny Fernandez landed on injured reserve due to a herniated disc in back.

Thomas is questionable for tonight and hasn't played since December 5, having missed the last two games. Tuukka Rask has also been seeing time in net with Thomas sidelined.

Marc Savard had his 12-game points streak halted in the win. He had at least one assist in each one of those games, and amassed two goals and 17 helpers during the run.

The Bruins are 8-7-2 on the road this year and wrap their trip in Atlanta on Wednesday.

Boston has won two of its three matchups with the Sabres this season, though the club has lost two straight and eight of its last nine trips to Buffalo overall.
