New Poll Shows Crist, Davis In Tight Race
POSTED: Monday, October 23, 2006
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida's race for governor between Republican Charlie Crist and Democrat Jim Davis has suddenly become too close to call.
Crist, the state's attorney general, had enjoyed double-digit leads in previous polls, but he's favored by just 46 percent of likely voters to Davis' 44 percent with eight percent undecided in a Quinnipiac University poll released Monday.
That's within the margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.
"We're feeling really good that the Quinnipiac poll has us only two points down at this point," Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor Daryl Jones said at an early-voting polling site in Miami-Dade County. "We've had a real strong run from about a month ago being 25 points down to now two points down (Monday) and by the time we hit Election Day, hopefully, we'll be ahead of the game."
Eleven percent of respondents indicated they could still change their minds in the race between Crist and Davis, a Tampa congressman. Gov. Jeb Bush is constitutionally prohibited from seeking a third consecutive term.
Davis and Crist have their first of two debates Tuesday.
The random telephone survey of 816 likely voters was taken between Wednesday and Sunday night.
