MIAMI -- As Senate Democrats vow to push through a health care reform bill with or without Republican support, a Republican senator who will be voting on the bill visited South Florida Tuesday.

Sen. George LeMieux and U.S. Reps. Mario and Lincoln Diaz-Balart toured Jackson Memorial Hospital's Army medical personnel training program. But at a news conference, all three wanted to talk about the proposed health care reform bill that has passed the House of Representatives and is now before the Senate for debate.

"I am afraid that the path we are headed on with this plan with a public option in it is that we are going to have low quality health care for the masses," LeMieux said. "We are going to turn Medicare into Medicaid, and this new program is going to be a place where doctors won't take it, long waits and sub-quality care."

"Unless the proposals before Congress are significantly amended and they became law, they would have a devastating effect on hospitals such as Jackson," Lincoln Diaz-Balart said.

Mario Diaz-Balart compared the public option in the bill with getting windstorm coverage in Florida.

"If you are really happen with being in Citizens, if you are really happy with the level of coverage and the cost, then you might want to consider supporting this bill," Mario Diaz-Balart said.

When a Jackson Memorial doctor was asked to weigh in on the public option, he gave a very diplomatic answer.

"It is a wonderful opportunity to work with the two parties and try to come up with the best solution, and I am glad that debate is going on," said Dr. Pascal Goldschmidt of the University of Miami School of Medicine.
