Pompano Beach Proposes Moving Marlins There

POSTED: Thursday, October 5, 2006

The Florida Marlins might be headed north to Broward County.

Pompano Beach Mayor John Rayson has contacted the Major League Baseball team with an enticing deal, city officials announced Tuesday.

The proposition includes a 37,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof -- something the Marlins have publicly said is a requirement for a new stadium -- at a price tag of $400 million.

The location of where the stadium might be built has not been revealed, but Broward County Mayor Ben Graber told The South Florida Sun-Sentinel that he hoped to present the plan to the County Commission before he leaves office Nov. 7.

The Marlins have been fielding offers from other cities ever since November, when the team announced it had received permission from the MLB to explore the possibility of relocation.

The team appeared close to reaching an agreement with San Antonio, but city leaders rescinded their offer to pledge $200 million toward the cost of building a new stadium there when MLB didn't meet a May 15 deadline to confirm the move.

The Marlins most recently had discussions with the city of Miami about building a stadium in a vacant lot downtown, but the property -- bordered by the south and north by Fifth and Seventh streets, and to the east and west by Miami Avenue and a Metrorail track -- belongs to Florida East Coast Industries.

The team is also in talks with the city of Hialeah, the state's fifth-most populous city located just a few miles northwest of downtown Miami, about building a facility there.

The Marlins have shared a stadium with the Dolphins since the franchise began play in 1993. Their lease ends in 2007, but the team could stay through the 2010 season using a series of one-year options -- yet team officials vow they won't play there any later than that.

The Marlins won the World Series in 1997 and 2003.
