(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves will shoot for their fifth straight win over the Florida Marlins when the two NL East rivals resume a four-game series Wednesday night at Land Shark Stadium.
Atlanta has won the first two portions of this set, including Tuesday's 4-3 victory in the return of starting pitcher Tim Hudson. Hudson recorded a win for the first time since last July with 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball and struck out five batters.
"I'm just happy for the opportunity to get out there, to see my teammates behind me and see how happy they were for me to get back out there," said Hudson. "It's been a long tough road, but it was very rewarding to be able to go out there and give us a chance to win and actually win the game."
Peter Moylan, Kris Medlen and Mike Gonzalez combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief before Rafael Soriano recorded his 21st save in the ninth inning despite surrendering a leadoff home run to Dan Uggla. Brian McCann had two hits and an RBI and Garret Anderson knocked in a run for Atlanta, which is still 7 1/2 games behind Philadelphia for the NL East lead and three games off the pace in the Wild Card standings.
The Braves will send another veteran starter in Javier Vazquez to the hill on Wednesday and he is 6-2 with a 2.99 earned run average over his last 10 starts. Vazquez ended a two-start losing streak the previous time out in a 9-1 win versus San Diego on August 27, as he held the Padres to five hits over seven shutout innings.
Vazquez, who is 11-9 with a 3.02 ERA in 26 starts this season, is 7-2 in 12 road outings. He has faced Florida three times in 2009 and sports an 0-2 mark with a 4.95 ERA. The right-hander is 6-7 with a 4.72 ERA in 20 career games, 19 of which have been starts, against the Marlins.
Florida has lost two in a row and five of its last six games to fall 9 1/2 games behind the Phillies in the East and five games back of the NL Wild Card- leading Rockies. Uggla homered and Jorge Cantu ended with three hits and a pair of runs batted in for the Marlins.
"I'm just trying to stay within myself, hit the ball hard, take some walks," said Uggla. "It's a long season. I have to keep doing my things and driving in runs. I think by the end of the year everything will work itself out."
Chris Coghlan also recorded three hits in a losing cause.
Rick VandenHurk gets the nod for the Marlins on Wednesday and he is 1-2 with a 7.98 ERA in his last three starts. VandenHurk was beaten by Colorado in his most recent start on August 16, and allowed six runs in 5 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts.
The righty fell to 2-2 in six starts and saw his ERA go from 4.15 to 5.12. VandenHurk will make his second start against the Braves after not factoring in the outcome of a 6-3 setback on July 30. He was reached for a pair of runs over six frames with nine K's. In six career games (5 starts) against Atlanta, VandenHurk is 2-0 with a 3.91 ERA.
Atlanta leads the 2008 season series with Florida by a slim 7-6 count and has won five of the last six matchups between the teams.
