Marlins To Meet With Hialeah Officials

The Florida Marlins will meet next week with Hialeah city officials to discuss the chances of a new ballpark being built for the team there.

The city is the state's fifth most-populous one and is located just a few miles northwest of downtown Miami.

In November, Marlins President David Samson announced that Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig had given the team permission to consider offers from other cities.

The announcement came after years of negotiations between the team, the city of Miami and Miami-Dade County to finance a new stadium. The Marlins requested a retractable-roof stadium at the site of the Orange Bowl, but could not come to an agreement on the funding.

The team and the city had hoped that the state would make up the deficit with tax funds, but the inactivity of the state caused that solution to die.

Samson would not say what offers the Marlins would consider, but Las Vegas has been mentioned repeatedly as a possible new location for the franchise. Marlins officials met with the mayor of Portland, Ore., earlier this month.

Samson said the team hopes to stay in South Florida.

The Marlins won the World Series in 1997 and 2003.
