MIAMI -- It’s taken a little longer than expected, but soon the northbound Interstate 95 express lanes from downtown Miami to the Golden Glades will be fully operational.
This will likely happen before the end of the month, and most drivers will have to pay to use the lanes. However, for some, free rides will continue indefinitely. But according to the Dept. of Transportation, you first have to qualify and you have to register.
If you drive a hybrid vehicle or carpool with at least two other people you can register at
95express.com and use the lanes for free.
The DOT said that, so far, only 215 carpool groups and around 2500 hybrids have registered.
Those who don’t carpool or drive a hybrid will have to pay to use the lanes. The fee will be somewhere between 25¢ and $6.20, depending on traffic congestion. If there’s a wreck on the regular lanes, you can expect to pay more to ride the express lanes to avoid traffic.
When the express lane project ends, the lanes will take you north and south on I-95 from downtown Miami to I-595 in Broward County.
