POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- Traffic on the the Atlantic Boulevard Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Pompano Beach was closed in both directions Wednesday after it got stuck in the upright position, trapping several workers.
Dept. of Transportation spokeswoman Barbara Kelleher told Local 10 that the men work for PCL Civil Constructors, a Tampa-based company that builds and renovates bridges.
At around 10 a.m. Monday, the east leaf opened suddenly while several people were on the bridge working on the hydraulic system. Four workers were trapped on the moving bridge.
Pompano Beach firefighters and Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue brought the workers safely, but the bridge remained in the upright position for several more hours. Traffic on the bridge reopened at 3:20 p.m.
The men were all wearing their harnesses and no injuries were reported.
The bridge is undergoing a $4.1 million renovation. PCL Civil Constructors is the prime contractor. The project covers electrical, mechanical and structural repairs, including replacement of the bridge tender building, work on the hydraulic system and widening sidewalks. Construction began in November 2009 and is scheduled to be completed in June.
The investigation into what prompted Wednesday's incident continues.
