WESTON, Fla. -- A driver was seriously injured Monday afternoon when his dump truck overturned on Interstate 75, closing several lanes of the highway for hours.
The crash happened just north of the Royal Palm Boulevard exit in the northbound lanes of I-75.
According to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, the Florida Highway Patrol said the truck's tire failed, causing the driver to lose control of the dump truck.
The effort to free the driver began before rescue crews arrived. Drivers who witnessed the truck veer out of control pulled over their cars to help.
"I have medical training, so I didn't want anyone to try to pull him out," said Wendy Fountain, who stopped to help the driver.
A technical rescue team had to use hydraulic tools to cut apart the truck and free the driver, a 34-year-old man.
"He's pinned in from his hip, and his leg is underneath the steering wheel and the dashboard," Fountain said.
The driver was freed after about 20 minutes and airlifted to Broward General Medical Center with serious injuries.
The overturned truck spilled about a ton of dirt and rocks all over the interstate. Authorities brought in equipment to remove the debris from the roadway.
All northbound lanes of the interstate were closed while the medical helicopter landed in the roadway and as authorities continued to clean up the dirt and rocks that were in the travel lanes. The interstate has since reopened.
