Broward Schools Remain Closed; Miami-Dade Students Return Thursday

POSTED: Tuesday, November 1, 2005

Miami-Dade County students will return to school Thursday, but Broward County schools will remain closed at least through Friday.

Both Miami-Dade and Broward schools have been closed since Hurricane Wilma struck Oct. 24.

Miami-Dade Superintendent Dr. Rudy Crew said students will have five days to make up, and the teacher's union and school board will meet Wednesday to determine the dates.

Crew said seniors would be able to reschedule SAT dates and can receive online support for any preparation time missed. He also said that county and utility officials have assured him that all debris will be removed from school campuses by the end of the day today and 80 percent of the traffic lights near schools will be functional by 6 a.m. Thursday.

Crew said that he has been told that 80 percent of traffic lights will be back in operation by 6 a.m Thursday. Those crosswalks where power has not been restored will have added traffic guards on duty.

Broward County School Still On Hold

Broward County students now will have missed two full weeks of school because of Wilma. Broward officials said that schools cannot reopen until the power is restored to the buildings.

They also said that there are 990 school zone caution lights, and they need to be sure that the loss of power hasn't created hazards for students. At 3 p.m. Tuesday, of the 1,350 traffic lights in the county only 153 traffic lights were fully operational. An additional 28 were on flash.

Of the 86 major intersections in Broward County, 40 of them now have functioning traffic lights.

Officials said even though they plan to add crossing and traffic guards if needed, the current situation is likely to cause traffic jams that would create unsafe conditions for walkers.

Broward school officials said that a decision regarding whether the schools will reopen next week will be made over the upcoming weekend.
